Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th in 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. While working two jobs, she studied secondary education. She planned on becoming a teacher of English in a secondary institution. This dream however, was short-lived when she quit college after three year of study and became an aide to teachers. She began her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her work during poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She became the first signed artist on Hidden Beach Recordings.
